Full-time participation and 'at risk' in the labour market: NOVEMBER 2008
Young people participate in the labour market in a variety of ways; in addition to full-time work or study many effectively combine work with learning. These young people are considered to be effectively engaged and participating in the labour market. However, young people who are not actively participating in the labour market, that is through paid full-time work or education and training or combining learning and work, are considered to be 'at risk' in the labour market.
Evidence suggests that these young people may face barriers to labour market participation over the longer term, particularly if they have not completed Year 12 or a comparable vocational qualification.
In November 2008, there were 46,200 young people (15 to 24 years) at risk in the labour market in South Australia. This figure represents 21.5% of 15 to 24 year olds compared with 18.1% nationally.
NOTES:
The methodology used to estimate the 'full-time participation' as described by the MCEETYA participation measure includes those people in full-time education and training, in full-time work, or in both part-time and part-time education or training.
The methodology used to estimate the proportion of young people 'at risk' in the labour market is based on the MCEETYA participation measure.
