Regional unemployment rates: indicators for year to October
2008

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publishes monthly labour force estimates for regional South Australia, classified at the Labour Force Dissemination Region level. These estimates are released one week after the release of main labour force aggregates (see Labour Force Brief, above).

Six Labour Force Regions within South Australia are covered: Northern and Western, Eastern and Southern Adelaide (within metropolitan Adelaide); with Northern and Western South Australia, and Southern and Eastern South Australia providing coverage for the remainder of the State.

Each month, DFEEST develops a Youth Activity Profile, part of which includes several key points about the labour market and learning activities of young South Australians aged 15 to 24 years.

Some of these key points are useful indicators which complement the regular Labour Force Brief, above.

Key points October 2008

  • Of the total population of 15 to 24 year olds in South Australia (214,700), 98,700 (46.0%) are studying full-time as their main activity*

  • A further 67,500 (31.4%) are working full-time

  • The number of 15 to 24 year olds in South Australia who are unemployed and seeking full-time work is 11,000 and the full-time unemployment to population ratio is 5.1%. The national ratio is 3.4%

  • The full-time unemployment rate faced by young (15 to 24 years) South Australians is currently 14.0% compared with 8.7% nationally).

It quantifies both the number of persons in the labour market (employed and unemployed) and those not participating in the labour force (marginally attached and not marginally attached).

The profile has been produced for persons, males and females to enable gender comparisons.
