Western Adelaide

The Western Adelaide region, as defined by the South Australian State Government, encompasses the Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Charles Sturt and West Torrens, and the Statistical Local Areas (SLAs) of Port Adelaide Enfield – Coast, Park and Port. DFEEST supports the Western Adelaide Workforce Development Network in providing employment and training opportunities within the region.

The Western Adelaide region has a relatively middle-aged population profile, with above average proportions of people aged 25 to 44 years and older people (65 years and older). The region has below average proportions of couples with children, and above average proportions of single parent families. There have been below average population increases over recent years, and the population is projected to continue to grow at a rate lower than the State average.

Key labour force indicators for the Western Adelaide region show below average labour force participation rates, and fluctuating levels of unemployment. Residents of the region are represented highly in professional, semi-professional, and clerical occupations. Just over 50% of residents work in areas outside the region, an indicator more of the close proximity to the Adelaide metropolitan area and central business district rather than a shortage of employment within the region.

The general level of education and qualifications in Western Adelaide is roughly equal to the State average, with slightly above average levels of school achievement and post-school qualifications.

Despite reducing unemployment rates, the population of the Western Adelaide region is relatively insecure in economic terms. The region records below average income levels and above average levels of income support recipients for some of the major benefits.
