Young people's labour market participation December 2011

Key points about the monthly labour market and learning activities of young South Australians aged 15 to 24 years of age are provided.

STUDYING FULL-TIME 107,400 (48.0%) are studying as their main activity (excludes those working full-time)

  WORKING FULL-TIME 62,200 (27.8%)

UNEMPLOYED AND SEEKING FULL TIME WORK 12,100 (full-time unemployment to population ratio 5.4%. National ratio is 4.7%)

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE 16.3% full-time unemployment rate. Compared with 13.0% nationally

Data presented are trend estimates derived by the Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology (DFEEST). The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) does not publish trend labour force data at a disaggregated level, therefore DFEEST has used the ABS methodology to produce trend labour force data for young people. As a result, the data presented here is not comparable to previous data. Trended data provides a more reliable indication of long-term trends by smoothing extreme estimates.
